Cardo's top-tier Packtalk Pro helmet communicator unit has been around a couple of years now, and finally, we've got substantial proof that the in-built safety tech can be a lifesaver with this story that recently came out of the USA.
One of the key features of the Cardo Packtalk Pro is its in-built Crash Detection system, which can detect if a road rider has had a crash and automatically send out an emergency alert to a contact that the rider may have been in an accident. It was this technology that has recently been credited with helping save the life of Arizona motorcyclist Dustin Hayes.
While out riding, Hayes was involved in a serious accident that resulted in him being thrown from his motorcycle. Following the impact, the Packtalk Pro’s Crash Detection system automatically sent an emergency alert to his wife, Brooke Hayes, notifying her that he may have been involved in an accident.
“I got a message on my phone saying ‘urgent,’ so I opened it,” Brooke Hayes told Fox 10. “It said Dustin might have been in a car accident or an accident, so I thought, ‘I’ll just drive out there. It’s 30 minutes away—just to double check.’”
Dustin was found in a spot which would have made it difficult for him to be seen without the notification from the Cardo Packtalk Pro.
“At Cardo, we pride ourselves on the quality, ingenuity, and technological development of our product range. When we learned about Dustin’s terrifying accident, we were deeply relieved to hear that our PackTalk Pro’s crash detection system played a role in helping to save his life,” remarked Dan Emodi, Cardo CMO. “This is exactly why we have invested over twenty years into innovative design and development, to ensure we create cutting edge products that not only enhance a rider’s experience, but can make a critical difference when it matters most. Our thoughts remain with Dustin and his family, as he recovers. We’re proud and honoured that our technology was there when he needed it.”
With a lengthy recovery expected, and the American healthcare system being notoriously expensive, the family set up a GoFundMe page to help manage medical and recovery-related costs.
We've been using Cardo products for over half a decade now, and swear by the brand as our go-to helmet communicator for its simplicity of use and all-weather durability as the first communicator company to provide an actually waterproof comms unit.
Currently, OnThrottle utilises a Packtalk Edge - which is a slight step down from the Packtalk Pro but still features excellent usability with easy-to-use bluetooth connectivity which can connect to multiple devices at a time (such as a phone and a seperate GPS unit or action camera), a magnetic mounting system, great built in speakers, noise cancellation for phone calls, and voice commands that actually work with the Kiwi accent.
Cardo Packtalk Pro in detail
Launched in 2024, the Cardo Packtalk Pro is Cardo Systems’ top-of-the-range motorcycle intercom, designed for riders who demand advanced communication and safety technology. The unit features in-built Crash Detection, automatic on/off functionality, and 45mm JBL speakers for enhanced audio performance in all riding conditions.
The Packtalk Pro is quick and easy to install without tools, thanks to Cardo’s patented magnetic Air Mount system, which ensures the unit remains securely attached throughout the ride. The device can be operated easily while wearing gloves.
Connectivity is provided via Dynamic Mesh Communication (DMC), allowing riders to connect with up to 15 participants simultaneously. An auto-healing connection ensures the group remains linked even if a rider temporarily drops out. Additional features include natural voice operation, an IP67 waterproof rating, over-the-air software updates, fast charging via USB-C, a built-in FM radio, universal Bluetooth intercom compatibility, and a three-year warranty.
