The KTM 390 line, along with its Husqvarna 401 brethren, are some of the coolest learner-approved models currently on offer, and now they have been recalled by KTM and Husqvarna Australia, which is also responsible for the brands here in New Zealand.
Thankfully for owners, the recall affected 2024-2026 KTM 390 Duke, Adventure R, Enduro R,. SMC R, along with the Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 and Vitpilen 401 of the same vintage, is relatively minor.
After quality testing revealed a condition that, in rare cases, could cause the engine to stall at low rpms. While only a limited number of cases have been observed, KTM and Husqvarna are taking decisive action to eliminate any potential risk and rectify the situation.
According to KTM and Husqvarna, the fix is a simple update to the engine control unit (ECU) software, which will be applied to all affected motorcycles. This update significantly reduces the risk of engine stalling, particularly at low speeds or during deceleration, while also improving rideability with improved low-end torque and increased engine stability.
Owners of affected motorcycles will receive a notification by letter and are requested to contact an authorised dealer to arrange a complimentary software update.
This appears to be the first recall under KTM's new ownership under Bajaj, which bailed the company out of financial strife in 2025. Where the previous feeling was that this sort of thing would be swept under the rug, it seems KTM's new management is determined to shed the KTM Group's previous customer service issues and take on any issue head-on.
That's great news for riders and the wider industry as a whole in our books, as we all deserve to be able to stand by our chosen bike brands and be looked after by them for choosing their products in a time where there is more excellent choice than ever.
